The bacteria that live in our mouth feed off plaque in between teeth at the gum line. When we eat foods that are rich in sugar or starches, bacteria feed on these components and release acids. Acids feed on tooth enamel. Cavities form when spots of tooth decay have eroded holes in our tooth enamel. This exposes the nerves and soft tissues inside which leads to sensitivity to temperature and touch. Other signs of a cavity or tooth decay include a toothache, persistent bad breath, and brown, black, or white staining on the tooth enamel.
But how can cavities be treated and prevented in the first place? Learn more about cavities and decay below.
We can refer you to a specialist to treat a cavity and tooth infection. In order to treat a cavity, any infection must be removed from within the cavity. Any holes or weakened areas in the tooth enamel are filled and reinforced to stop decay and block further infection.
We suggest that patients brush their teeth at least daily and even after meals using fluoride toothpaste. Flossing daily removes plaque and prevents cavities from forming in hard to reach spaces between your teeth. Another preventative measure is to cut down on carbohydrates and make sure that you are properly hydrated. Dry mouth increases the likelihood of bacteria breaking down the tooth enamel.
The most important step to preventing cavities and tooth decay is to keep up with regular check-ups and dental cleanings.
